I’ve always wanted to plan a Kentucky Derby Party. Being a horse enthusiast I have plenty of décor that would make the event look amazing: my saddle, boots, ribbons, riding hat, a silver punch bowl, and plenty of Mint Julep cups. I even own a real pair of jockey silks and countless Breyer horse models (currently in my attic) that I have saved since my childhood.
Fortunately for us, even though another year went by without visiting Louisville or hosting a Derby Party – we were invited to attend our friend’s wonderful annual bash celebrating the run for the roses.
The host and his wife are also horse enthusiasts, and so they always go all out for the party. In addition to the décor and food (complete with Derby Pie and a jockey statue greeting guests as they arrive) they always have a wonderful “betting window” where you can place a fun $5 bet on the horse of your choosing.
Although we were about 600 miles away from Churchill Downs it felt like we were trackside. I had a $5 ticket for California Chrome to win, hats all around me, and a Mint Julep in my hand.
